Visualization of information as a competence and an education method in the information architecture course

Zbigniew Osiński

Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin

The aim of the speech will be to share the conclusions from the first semesters of functioning the field of study of Information Architecture at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. It turned out that the specificity of this field of study allows to create a higher education model deviating from the previously implemented – general academic, focused on getting to know theories and professional ones, oriented to the needs of a particular profession. The new model presents a higher education model whose essence is the acquisition of competences – the ability to use knowledge and skills to solve the problem, complete the task. This problem will be discussed in the example of shaping competencies in the field of information visualization. Increasingly, it is noticed that the media, science, advertising, business analytics, etc. use the information transmission in the form of visualization. Correct reading and understanding of such a message require specific skills. In the previous studies, the author stated that graduates of the Polish education system do not have sufficient skills to efficiently read visualizations, and especially for generalizing detailed information, reading the meaning of graphic elements and planning the information architecture and presenting the message in visual form. In his speech, the author will share ideas for methods of conducting classes that will allow to train the missing skills and the first conclusions from their usage.
