Invisible data – what do data visualizations hide from us (even the good ones)?

AIDA 3 / June 9 - 10 2022

Karol Piekarski

When asked about the features of good visualization, we will focus on the adequate selection of content, clear organization of data or attractive visual layer of the project. Rarely do we think about less obvious aspects such as accessibility, consistency or credibility of the data presented. Many important curatorial decisions and certain elements of the design process remain intentionally hidden from the audience in the name of ergonomics and legibility of the interface. Using case studies from Medialab Katowice, I will show that invisible sources, data, or meta-information often determine the usability of visualizations and can have a key impact on user experience.
