Graphical interface of numerical and statistical data – design issues on the example of workshop effects with students of design courses

Przemysław Paliwoda

Pedagogical University of Cracow

Presentation of workshop classes results that are continuously organized since 2012. These workshops, entitled „Information Architecture”, „Ikonografika”, „Data Visualization”, deal with information in the graphic medium. The participants of the course are students from Communication Design, School of Form (SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities), students of a project oriented on visual communication issues, and occasionally students of the Faculty of Arts at the Pedagogical University of Krakow. The starting materials are numerical and statistical data (eg GUS data; The Central Statistical Office Poland). During the classes, students will use these data as a basis for the emerging project in the aim to develop of graphic (2d) interfaces in the form of prints. The task is to design a visual structure adapted to various (in terms of data volume, measurement units, amplitude of results or research topics) data sets. The presentation will include issues such as the search for design solutions, examples of completed works, and the methodology that has been followed.
